Krinklewood is a family run biodynamic vineyard and farm that perpetually strives to produce wines reflecting the unique characteristics of the Krinklewood terroir. Every aspect of the vineyard is managed in a holistic and sustainable way which is shown in the individuality and superior quality of the wines. More than a cellar door experience for visitors, Krinklewood is a living example of the importance of biodynamic viticulture. The cellar door is set amongst Provencal gardens, urns and fountains with the Wollombi Brook and Brokenback Range providing a spectacular backdrop.
In 2007 Krinklewood Vineyard became Certified Biodynamic. Krinklewood converted to Biodynamics because its better for the environment, better for the people that live & work on the farm and most importantly that the result is a better quality wine.
Biodynamics is a homeopathic medicine for agriculture, based on using natural means to obtain a better, more sustainable and healthier end product. Based on the Rudolf Steiner philosophy, it is believed that every plant is influenced by the two major energy forces in the world-the earthly & the cosmic and each individual farm is seen as an individual organism that should be as self –sufficient as possible. A Biodynamic farm should have a diversity of crops & livestock and one should give to life to the other. Biodynamics recognizes that the soil itself is alive, and this vitality supports and affects the quality and health of the plants that grow in it. Biodynamic farming is organic, although it differs in that BD farmers use special Biodynamic preparations and they are applied a certain times of the year. The BD preparations act like a catalyst if used in the correct rhythm to improve the health of the plant or increase the life in the soil, ie: Preparation 500 is made from cow manure, it is applied to the farm in droplet form in the late afternoon of a descending moon or when the moon is in opposition to Saturn. ( For more detailed information on BD preparations used at Krinklewood see www.krinklewood.com )
“I just want to make great wines; and the biodynamic approach seemed the logical means to achieving this. Now we are seeing Krinklewood stand up against some of the best wines in the country, and to me this brilliantly reinforces that the biodynamic approach is the way forward for us” says Rod.
“Our aim is to make wine that actually tastes of where it is grown. We use no pesticides or chemical sprays, and we nurture our vines to good health, allowing the natural cycle of the season to ripen the fruit. This means we are getting great intensity of flavour and a new style of vibrant fresh wines with characteristics that are specific to Krinklewood” says Rod.
